Miah/Mian was a surname originally given to some clans by the Mughals. In punjab it is Mian and in Bengal it is Miah. It is a very common Sylethi surname.

Surnames in Bangladesh are very tricky and has few historical context. Traditionally, we don't carry on the last name like people in the west do. In fact, even Indians/Pakistanis have carried on their surnames as they were more clan and caste based. Yes, even some North Indians and Pakistani Muslims have strict caste based lineages. Plus they have a lot of ethnic groups that came from Central Asia/Turkic regions and thus people naturally carried on their surnames. For example, Afghanis/Pashtuns are very tribal based. Surnames like Zazai, Afridi, Naib are name of their tribes.

But we do not have such clan or caste based practice. Bengalis (in general) are a extremely homogeneous group. There were some foreign influence but it is very minimal.

Look at the BD team, it is full of Hassan and Hossains. I have 5 uncles and each of them has different last names haha.
