KARACHI: The West Indies are yet to confirm their participation in next months four-nation twenty20 tournament in Toronto, forcing the organisers to think about moving the event to October.

Sources in the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) told The News on Sunday that the events organisers are now considering back-up plans as the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) is yet to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the T20 quadrangular planned for August 14-17.

Pakistan, Bangladesh and hosts Canada the other three competing teams have already signed the MoUs for the Toronto twenty20 competition that is aimed at reviving international cricket in Canada.

But in spite of repeated attempts, the events organisers have been unable to sign an MoU with the West Indians.

According to one official, WICB has verbally agreed to send its team for the four-nation contest but he pointed out that unless a contract is signed, it would be risky for the promoters to go ahead with plans of hosting the event in mid-August.

The official said that if a deal is not signed with the West Indians within the next couple of days, then the organisers will have to look for a new four-day slot for the tournament. We dont have much time left in the start of the tournament which is why a quick decision is needed about the dates, said the official. If there is no luck then we will have to take the event to October when all the four teams will be free of any international commitments.

A source added that if the West Indians are still reluctant in signing the MoU even if the event is moved to October then the organisers will replace them with some other team.

The Toronto quadrangular is to serve as a warm-up event for Pakistan ahead of Septembers Champions Trophy to be held on home soil. Pakistan were to announce their 15-man squad for the tournament next week following a series of practice games in Lahore.
