There are few reasons behind it

1/ There were internal rivalries between players from opposing clubs. Abahani players never got along with Mohammedan players.

2/ Clubs used to influence the player selection, (this is happening to this day). National team Coach/managers were dominated by the club officials to pick their players or loose their job.

3/ Corruption played a major role, money granted by FIFA for buying balls/develop pitches or bring coaches etc were stolen regularly from the BFF coffers.

4/ We hardly had proper trainer/physio with the team.
Then you must not be young enough to remember Bangladesh in the 90s used to beat Pakistan by big margins! And if you read I never said we easily beat India.
