Since the rule of game is electoral college and not popular vote, winning the presidency ultimately boils down to winning few swing states. That is where the strength of Bernie lies against Trump.
Even in 2016, Bernie was sure to win the rust belt states - Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Indiana. But the Democratic establishment has a flawed strategy. They organize southern states primary early to prop up a candidate they like - and yes Hillary won the Southern states and became a front runner by Super Tuesday. But did it matter? It did not because those states are guaranteed red in general.
Had Hillary chosen Bernie or even Elizabeth Warren as her VP, she would be POTUS today. But out of her hubris, she could not choose anyone more popular than her. She wanted the limelight completely on her, and thus she chose a no name plastic Republican-lite Tim Kaine as her running mate. Result? Trump is POTUS, Bernie gets to run again, and she is going to grave as the biggest ever political LOSER.
Among the democratic candidates of 2020, none comes close to Bernie in terms of strength to win rust belt states. Not even Biden. Bernie is also very likely to flip one state from Arizona, Texas, and Florida.
That is why Trump is worried only about Bernie, because this is the only candidate against whom he cannot hold the swing states he needs for reelection. Trump is stupid but he has better political acumen than many of the highly paid Republican and Democratic strategists, who actually know nothing.
