You are correct - that is why most societies consider incest and marriage to first cousins taboo.

Because of shared genes (8% between first cousins), there is a high likelihood of recessive genetic disorders showing up.
I hope some researcher makes the effort to find out the prevalence of such disorders among the Sylheti population in Bangladesh. I'd be curious to know the findings. (I only say Sylheti because they are known to have a high prevalence of cousin marriages for an identifiable regional population).
