Qazi Habibul Bashar Sumon
Career Sketch by Miran Rahman
Aggressive number three batsman and occasionally useful part time
off spinner who's first significant contribution for the national
team was a rapid 70 against Zimbabwe in 1997. After a period
in the wilderness he took advantage of injuries in the Bangladesh
side to turn in some handy performances with bat and ball against
the West Indies in 1999. Also
impressed against England 'A' in the same year. Has achieved
a couple of notable firsts for Bangladeshi cricket: scored Bangladesh's
first fifty in the Test arena after initially being left out of
the Test squad, an omission which caused a public outcry and led
to his hasty reinstatement. In January 2001 he became the
first Bangladeshi to hit a first-class double century.
Career highlights:
108 and 76 against Zimbabwe in the second TEST (November 2001) sharing
a 122 second wicket partnership with Golla (80) in the second innings.
65 against Zimbabwe in the first TEST (Nov 2001) in a 102 run second wicket
partnership with Golla (35)
74 in ODI (91 balls) against Zimbabwe in 2001. Shared an 84 run (17 overs)
partnership with Golla for the third wicket
71 and 30 against India in Bangladesh's inaugural Test in 2000
70 in ODI against Zimbabwe in 1997
143*, 35 and 2/28 in first-class match against England 'A' in 1999
