A tall, talented but frustratingly enigmatic young middle order
batsman, (frequently described as "flighty" in Bangladeshi newspapers)
who struggled at international level until sound performances
against the West Indies and England 'A' late in 1999 helped strengthen
his claim to a place in the National side.
Injuries to Shahriar Hussein and Mehrab Hussein during Bangladesh's
unsuccessful tour of South Africa in October 2000 meant that al-Shahriar
was pushed up the order to open, a task which he performed with
mixed results. Like a number of his colleagues he urgently
needs to tighten up his back foot technique when faced with seam
bowling - he looked all at sea when confronted by Gough and Caddick
in an ODI in 2000.
Raquib-ul-Hassan, the Bangladeshi cricket administrator and former
National captain who was once twelth man in a Test for Pakistan,
rates al-Shahriar particularly highly and sees him as the natural
candidate for taking up the middle order mantle of Amin-ul-Islam
and Akram Khan when they retire.
