Career Sketch by Miran Rahman
|
A player who returned to international cricket after a brief
and premature retirement in the summer of '99. Has frequently
done the job for Bangladesh against non-Test opponents, (took
nineteen wickets at 10.68 in the 1997 ICC Trophy) but has looked
more innocuous against world class batsmen on seamer or batsmen
friendly tracks. Rafiq holds the current Bangladeshi record
for the most number of maidens bowled in an ODI, (five against
India in 1998) and also bowled a lot of tidy overs against the
same opposition in Bangladesh's first Test. This performance
was soured for Rafiq though, as soon afterwards the legality of
his action was questioned, (as was that of Naim-ur-Rahman) and
Rafiq responded somewhat tardily to demands that he have his bowling
action checked.
Rafiq is also a flashy, attacking batsman lower order batsman
who loves to chip the ball over the in-field and has occasionally
been used in a surprise role at the top of the order.
