A burly middle order batsman who uses his physical bulk to hit the ball
hard
rather than relying too much on technique - he and Naim-ur-Rahman savaged
the Indian attack in an ODI in 2000, helping to add 91 runs in the
last ten
overs. Akram has scored more ODI fifties than any other Bangladeshi
and he
top scored in Bangladesh's 1999 win over Pakistan. He is also capable
of
batting more circumspectly where circumstances demand; battled staunchly
for
an unbeaten 10 off 60 deliveries in Bangladesh's third disasterous
one-dayer
against a South African invitation XI in October 2000 when the team
was
skittled out for 57. Hit an aggressive 35 in the first innings of
Bangladesh's inaugural Test. Has also bowled medium pace on occasion
but
without success and is unlikely to bowl much in future in international
matches. Something of a liability in the field.
Akram has captained the national team in fifteen ODIs and is fondly
remebered for leading Bangladesh to victory in the 1997 ICC Trophy.
He hit a
crucial, match saving half century against Holland in a game which
could
well have seen Bangladesh knocked out of the tournament and consigned
to
cricketing limbo for another few years. |
